Biography
I became interested in martial arts in the mid seventies, starting first with Judo and progressing to Aikido.
When I started at what was then the Birmingham Polytechnic in 1979 I joined a Goju Kai dojo led by Ali Golshan. About mid 1980 the club switched to Goju Ryu, changed it's affiliation and joined the EGKA which was headed by Sensei James Rousseau.
I progressed throught the ranks, took my 1st Dan in 1988 and my 2nd Dan in 1990. Ali retired from teaching leaving Warren and I to carry on with the Birmingham dojo.
Increased workload and distance to the nearest dojo put karate on a back seat for a while.
A change in employer brought me back to Birmingham in 2002 and I began training once more, achieving my 3rd dan black belt in August 2005.

Biography
I started karate with Kash the "Flash" Gill in 1991 and dabbled with a variety of styles until settling on Goju Ryu in 1993. I trained under Sensei Tony Smith in Hereford initially and then under Sensei Warren Easy in Birmingham. Following Sensei Warren's untimely and very sad death I now train under Sensei Martin Birrell. I have seen our club prosper, struggle and once more prosper.
I took my shodan in 2001 which was extremely gratifying. I now teach and passed my nidan in summer 2004. Deciding to teach was a very good decision and I recommend it to all those who consider taking the plunge, of course it can be annoying having to turn up each week but I enjoy every lesson I take and love the freedom to plan what I want to base the lesson on. It has also ensured I look deeper into my own karate.
I supplement my GKI training with seminars with exceptional Goju and related senseis I have met as a result of involvement with the "United Goju Forums" and other internet connections.
I am the secretary for the GKI, which keeps me busy! I am currently in the process of starting up a premanent dojo, which will also keep me busy.
